From easing traffic congestion to providing faster and safer ways to travel long distances, nearly every tunnel on earth is built to solve a specific problem or challenge.
Roads in India is a story in itself speaking of the civil engineering marvels. But not all interesting things happen or are seen above ground. There are some very interesting tunnels in India. Tunnels bored through imposing mountains stands as a laurel to challenges overcame by excellence and years of perseverance of civil engineers of the country.
Here, Rakhduu presents a collection of India’s most interesting and impressive tunnels.

1. Pir Panjal Tunnel

Pir Panjal is 11.215 Km long tunnel connecting Bichleri Valley of Banihal with Qazigund area of Kashmir Valley. It is India’s first longest transport tunnel and Asia’s second longest tunnel. While, the longest tunnel in Asia is the Wushaoling tunnel (20 km) in Gansu, China.

2. Karbude Tunnel

Karbude Tunnel was the longest rail tunnel in India before Pir Panjal tunnel. The Karbude tunnel is 6.5 Km long. One of the India’s biggest engineering marvels like Karbude tunnel is the longest rail tunnel on Konkan railway line situated between Ukshi and Bhoke station.

3. Rohtang Tunnel

The Rohtang Tunnel is the World’s Highest Road Tunnel situated under the Rohtang Pass of eastern Pir Panjal range of the Himalayas on the Leh-Manali Highway in Himachal Pradesh. The  8.8 Km long two-lane road tunnel is the second longest road tunnel of the country, situated at an elevation of 3,978 meters above sea level and is expected to reduce the distance about 60 km between Manali and Keylong.

4. Jawahar Tunnel

Banihal Tunnel is also known as Jawahar Tunnel, is a 2.5 Km long road tunnel under the Banihal pass, situated between Banihal and Qazigund in Jammu and Kashmir. It is amongst the list of longest road tunnel of India connecting Jammu to Kashmir Valley. Banihal Tunnel is located on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway at a height of 2194 m above sea level. It has been revamped now with modern facilities like temperature sensors, CCTV, ventilation system, emergency exit and a world-class lighting system.

5. Kamshet Tunnel

The Kamshet West-Tunnel or Kamshet I tunnel is 1.8 Km long road network tunnel situated near Kamshet in Pune, Maharashtra. It is the longest road tunnel in Maharashtra having 2 tubes with three lanes and forms a part of six-lane concrete tolled Mumbai Pune Expressway. Only 93 Km long! Maharashtra in short time will witness 8 Km long road tunnel, the second longest tunnel in the country connecting Khopoli to Lonavala.
