Owners brag about the number of kitchens and preparation areas. And the surprisingly large quantity of helpful servers and waiter staff that they employ. Of course, size is not necessarily an indication of quality and an exceptionally large restaurant devoid of patrons is not likely to last very long. Good food and reasonable service are required of all successful restaurants, large and small alike. Still, we were impressed with these top 10 world’s largest restaurants.
1. Bawabet Dimashq Restaurant – Damascus, Syria
According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the largest restaurant in the world is the Damascus Gate Restaurant, located in Damascus, the Syrian capital. The owner, Shaker Al Samman, boasts that there a startling 6,014 seats in his 215,000 square foot restaurant. The Damascus Gate is open seven days a week and features outdoor seating for nine out of twelve months.
2. Royal Dragon Restaurant – Bangkok Thailand
The Royal Dragon, constructed in 1991, was granted the title of the largest restaurant in the world in the 1992 Guinness Book of World Records. The Royal Dragon seats 5,000 hungry patrons in its expansive 8.35-acre establishment. The kitchen staff is so efficient that they are able to turn out as many as 3,000 dishes an hour.
The Royal Dragon menu features more than 1,000 Asian and Western style dishes. The restaurant is so large that servers use roller skates to deliver food to hungry guests. There is also a cable stretching across the dining room that allows servers to seemingly fly from one end to the other.
3. West Lake Restaurant – Changsha, China
Completed in 2004, the West Lake Restaurant (Xihulou transliterated from the Chinese) is now considered to be the largest restaurant in all of Asia with more than 5,000 seats. It holds the current record for the largest Chinese restaurant in the world, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. The restaurant’s design is modeled after the Forbidden City in Beijing.
The West Lake has five kitchens utilizing the skills of more than 300 chefs among its more than 1,000 employees. The kitchens use food in amazing quantities; their food preparations consume three tons of fish, a ton of pork, a ton of chili peppers, and 200 live snakes each and every week.
4. Zehnder’s – Frankenmuth, Michigan
Zehnder’s has been in operation since 1928 providing its Midwestern guests with fine hospitality and great food. The combined seating of its nine dining rooms can accommodate up to 900 guests. The Frankenmuth location has been one of Michigan’s finest resort areas since 1856. Every year, Zehnder’s serves more than a million guests.
5. Carmines – Washington, D.C.
This New York-based Italian family style eatery recently opened its newest location in Washington’s Penn Quarter. With 20,300 square feet of dining space, Carmine’s has chiefly 700 seats available for hungry diners. That makes it the largest restaurant in United States of America’s capital.
6. Carmines, Caesars Palace – Las Vegas, Nevada
This Carmine’s is now the largest non-nightclub restaurant on the Vegas Strip. It seats as many as 800 guests within the confines of its 28,000 square foot restaurant. It takes more than 220 employees to keep this Italian-style eatery running smoothly.
7. Lundy’s – Brooklyn, New York
The original Lundy’s (closed in 1977) was reputedly the largest restaurant in the United States at that time. It’s said that the original Lundy’s in the Sheepshead Bay neighborhood was capable of seating between 2,400-2,800 guests at any one time. A much smaller Lundy’s, 800 to 900 seats, was open until 2007.
8. Varsity Downtown – Atlanta, Georgia
The Varsity Downtown is the world’s largest drive-in restaurant with a two-story, two-acre parking facility that can accommodate 600 cars and up to 800 people inside. Varsity is also the world’s largest single supplier of Coca Cola and sells massive amounts of burgers, Hot dogs and French fries each day. During football season, some 30,000 Georgia Tech fans have been known to crowd into the Varsity on game days.
9. McDonald’s – London, England
McDonald’s unique pop-up restaurant was built in 2012. It was open for just six weeks, during the time in which London hosted the Summer Olympic Games. This gigantic McDonald’s included a seating for 1,500 diners and holds the record for most people served in a single day, at 14,000.
10. Cosmo – Croydon, England
Cosmo is Great Britain’s largest permanent restaurant. The branch of the Cosmo chain was completed in 2010 and designed to serve more than 800 guests each evening. The restaurant covers more than 22,000 square feet and employs 50 chefs to cook more than 300 items featured on the Cosmo’s menu.
